Topical Minoxidil
What It Is
Minoxidil is a topical hair growth medication originally developed as a blood-pressure drug. When applied to the scalp, it promotes hair growth and slows hair loss.
Available as:
-
5% solution
-
5% foam (often better tolerated)
-
Higher concentrations (10-15%) exist but are not FDA-approved.
How It Works
Minoxidil acts locally on the scalp and supports hair growth through multiple mechanisms:
1. Increases blood flow to hair follicles
It widens blood vessels, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to follicles.
2. Prolongs the anagen (growth) phase
Hair stays in the growing phase longer - thicker and longer hair.
3. Enlarges miniaturized follicles
Helps reverse follicle shrinkage seen in androgenetic alopecia (male/female pattern hair loss).
4. Converts vellus hairs to terminal hairs
Thin “peach-fuzz” hairs gradually become thicker, pigmented terminal hairs.
What It’s Used For
Minoxidil 5% is FDA-approved for:
-
Male pattern baldness
-
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL)
It's also commonly used off-label for:
-
Beard growth
-
Eyebrow thickening
-
Telogen effluvium support (post-stress shedding)
How to Use Minoxidil 5%
General guidelines:
-
Apply 1 mL twice daily to thinning areas (or once daily for foam or if sensitive - still effective for many).
-
Ensure the scalp is dry before use.
-
Do not wash for 4 hours after application.
-
Avoid getting the product on the face unless intentionally applied for beard growth.
Who Gets the Best Results
Minoxidil works best for:
-
Younger users
-
Hair loss within the last 5 years
-
Thinning on crown or vertex
-
People using it consistently
It is less effective for:
-
Completely bald areas
-
Long-standing hair loss with dead follicles
